Salmon, stewardship, and Indigenous Livelihoods

In this CCI Seminar Series, Dr. Janessa Esquible will highlight Indigenous stewardship practices, knowledge systems and governance mechanisms pertaining to salmon in the Kuskokwim Region of southwestern Alaska.

Janessa is Mexican-American, and a Tribal citizen of Walpole Island First Nation community, located in southern Ontario. In 2014, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Zoology at Michigan State University with a specialization in American Indian Studies. In 2018, she received her Master of Science in the College of Fisheries and Ocean Science (CFOS) University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), and in August of 2024, successfully defended her PhD dissertation research.
