Abstract

Near the tip of the Alaska Peninsula between the rich waters of the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska lies the smallest Wildlife Refuge in the State of Alaska, but its size does not reflect its outsized value as a biodiversity stronghold. Spanning over 310,000 acres-the size of Grand Teton National Park-Izembek National Wildlife Refuge is home to hundreds of species, including caribou, brown bears, foxes, wolves, salmon, seals, sea otters, walrus, and tens of thousands of resident and migratory birds and waterfowl that depend on the Refuge’s wetlands for their survival.
